The appeal of growing your own
There's hardly anything more satisfying than watching a plant grow – from the first tender leaf to the resinous, fragrant flower. Growing your own plants gives you complete control over the final product. But the success of your project is often decided in the very first days.
Choosing your genetics: The foundation of your success
A healthy cutting is half the battle. At Cannabees, we work with stabilized genetics such as Blueberry Muffin, Limoncello , and Harlequin , which have been specially bred for Swiss conditions. When buying cuttings, pay attention to these three characteristics:
-
Vitality & Structure: The plant should display a rich green color and have a strong stem. Erygetic (too long, thin) shoots indicate insufficient light.
-
Root system: Healthy roots are white and finely branched. They are the engine of the plant.
-
Resistance: Good genetics are naturally more resistant to pests such as spider mites or powdery mildew.
The legal situation in Switzerland
In Switzerland, the cultivation of CBD hemp is legal as long as the THC content is below 1% . Our cuttings strictly meet this requirement when cultivated correctly. However, please note: Depending on the canton, hemp cultivation may be subject to registration requirements. Check with your local municipality or the cantonal agricultural office beforehand to be on the safe side.
Light cycles and phases: From growth to flowering
Hemp is a photoperiodic plant. This means it adapts to the duration of light:
-
Growth phase (vegetative): Your cuttings need 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness. During this time, the plant develops its structure and leaves.
-
Flowering phase (generative): As soon as you switch the lighting to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness, the plant begins to flower. This process takes between 8 and 10 weeks, depending on the strain.
5 professional tips for healthy plants
-
The right climate: Keep the temperature between 22°C and 26°C. During the growth phase, the humidity can be slightly higher (approx. 60%), but in late flowering it should drop below 45% to prevent mold.
-
Systematic watering: Hemp doesn't like "wet feet". Only water when the top 2-3 cm of the substrate are dry.
-
Check the pH level: Hemp absorbs nutrients best at a pH level between 5.8 and 6.5. An incorrect value often leads to deficiency symptoms, even though there is actually enough fertilizer present.
-
Cleanliness: Clean your tools regularly. Many pests are introduced through unclean tools.
-
Be patient during the drying process: Harvesting is just the beginning. Slow drying at around 18°C preserves the terpenes and ensures a smooth smoke.
